Using the GAME Plan Process with Students

Using the GAME plan process is an excellent way for students to become self-directed learners!  Setting goals, taking action, monitoring progress, and evaluating progress is a great way for students to evaluate their own learning and see how they can improve.  For students to develop proficiency in the technology standards and indicators outlines in the NETS-S, they need to be aware of what they are.  In my classroom I can show them the ISTE website (http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-students/nets-student-standards-2007.aspx) so that they are aware of the standards.  They can pick out some of the standards that they feel they need to work on, and then make their own GAME plan.  I think that it would be good for them to record their progress in a blog or journal, which would serve as a good way to keep track of everything.  It would also be easy for students to look at their work and then reflect on what they have done and learned.  I would have different projects for students to complete that incorporate technology so that they can work on becoming proficient in the NETS-S.  They could also post links to their projects on their blogs to show their progress of their GAME plan.

Making a GAME plan will help students see the value in learning new information and strengthening their skills.  They need to be self-directed learners throughout life, so they need to be taught how to do that.  Creating their own GAME plans makes it individual and more meaningful to them because it is up to them to reach their goals.  Of course students could consult me for assistance and I would provide multiple opportunities for them to complete activities to meet their goals, but they would have a large control of their learning, which teaches them a very valuable skill:  to become self-directed learners.

  1. Danielle,

I couldn't agree with you more! I too, think that the GAME plan for learning is definitely a way to aide our students in becoming self-directed learners and responsible for their own learning. By focusing on GOALS, ACTION, MONITORING and EVALUATION, our students are given the guidance that they need to master the content area objectives and be ready for the workplace in the future. Good luck to you and your students!

  2. Hi Danielle,
Thanks for a great post! Like Stacy, I couldn't agree with you. Training our students to become self-directed learners is the most valuable gift we could ever give to our students. Life long learning is a must in catching up with our society's growing needs and demand for skilled students.
Using the GAME plan, I too find it useful and practical to help our students to focus their goal and set measurable and practical steps to achieve it. Having dreams come true shall no longer be a abstract concept, with the step by step instruction of different part of the GAME plan, students should be able to experience a more manageable portion of their learning as they move up the knowledge ladder.
With your guidance and leadership, I am sure your students are going to benefit a lot from you! Good luck to you all!
    Sarah

  3. I agree with you that students need to be self-reflective learners. You are right about students learning how to improve on what they do, whether it be skill based or understanding. This is a life-long skill they will need for anything personal and career based. None of us are perfect but we can better ourselves. Great point Danielle!

  4. Hi Danielle-

Immersing students in technology is a highly effective way to enable your students to achieve the NETS-S standards. They should be familiar with these standards and be able to determine which standards they need to work on to be proficient. I think that integrating technology into your classroom is great way to accomplish this. You are right to say that students will need you as a guide. It is so very important to be there to scaffold for your students and lead them toward success. The GAME plan is a great way to help students achieve all of their goals. It teaches organization and is a great motivational tool. With the GAME plan, students are in control of their learning because they are setting their own goals and it is their responsibility to reach those goals.

  5. You make a great point that having a GAME plan for each student makes it more individualized. I think this will go a long way with having the students realize that their learning is and will become more and more of their responsibility as they get older. It would be great if students could have their own portfolio so that they could create their GAME plan and monitor it as they go through school.
